#30 - Myth of Young Champions and College Sports Cuts: Heartbreaking Impact on Athletes

In this episode of the podcast, Heavy Or Not, we kick off with friend and O.G., Wayne Goldsmith. His rant delves into the unsettling mark of young champions at the age of 8 and 9. His podcast is called, Sports Thoughts.

Then we pivot to talk about two successful college sports programs that have been abruptly cut. Oh no! Cal Polly Swimming, Men & Women's Teams, plus Grand Canyon University Men's Volleyball suffered unexpected and unexplainable cuts.

Heavy topics. Abrupt losses. Heartbreaks.

Notes: The opening segment supplied by Wayne is a fine example of a "Heavy Or Not Jump Cut Rant." Rather than doing typical podcast interviews, this first-person rant is desired and welcome. You too can send in your messages to be included as well. Upload to https://UCANSwim.WeTransfer.com.

Share a story. Sound off on a topic. Cut to the chase and use your phone to make a recording. Of course, a video is fine too, but the audio needs to be present. A couple of photos work well too.

Update: It happened again!

@leighfriestedt at Equity IX Sports Law & @ichampionwomen sent this demand letter to @calpoly California Polytechnic State University for sex discrimination, when the school cut the women’s swimming program. Cal Poly tried to tell the swimmers it was money, but they are apparently unaware that funding shortages is not ax excuse to treat women worse.
If the school has to keep the women’s program, it exponentially increases the likelihood of keeping the men’s program as well.
    — Cal Poly needs to add 38.9% more women’s athletic opportunities, to equal the number of opportunities the school provides to men, or 115 more women.
    — Using the unduplicated count, Cal Poly would need to add 141 more female athletes to its athletic programs, to achieve equity in athletic participation opportunities.
    — Could Title IX save Olympic sports??
Be sure to see the google documents link in Swimming World Magazine link: the swimmers and their families put together… It is astounding the differences between male and female athletics resources & facilities.
